a tribute by john c. erianne:

ON FAME AND POETRY

WC Williams got an obit
in the NY Times

Langston Hughes, Ginsberg,
even Bukowski got one

And Michael McNeilley?
probably not
no statues erected in parks
no medals from presidents

his obituary will be written
in the hearts of weary
travelers who dare to
live and love
fully even foolishly
in places the famous
fear to go
and in the
winter when
they are wrapped
around their
lovers
in front of
brick fireplaces
they can use
the NY Times
to light the
kindling.

   NO DAY AT THE BEACH
(after mcn)

2 days after the news
that a great poet had
died, a day at the beach
that was no day
at the beach and
I am thinking
about my father,
heart attacks
strokes
family history and
the fifty extra pounds
I carry sweating
running, gasping
3 blocks from the
boardwalk in 90-
degree heat
(a 7 tanning index)
to the parking meter
so I can refill it before
it's tagged by police
when I realize someone
has beaten me to it--
a note scrawled on
my filthy windshield:
"Don't mention it."

Kind of got me
thinking.
