Jan McLaughlin’s life has a life of its own. She enjoys anything having to do with sound: conversation, film, dance, theater, music, chaos, and silence. Despite her life-long romance with language, McLaughlin says, “Words mean nothing. Action is everything.”

Princess-at-Large

• What do you do for a living?
To the extent possible in a world of responsibility and paperwork, I attempt to live an artful and sense-based life, which means I am politically a Personal Anarchist, and pretty much do exactly what I want.

For money, however, I am a professional listener, and as part of that move stuff around from one place to another in an expeditious manner. Yes, I’m in the ‘moving’ business.

• Who are your favorite artists?

Not in any particular order: God, Alan Greenspan, Jenny Holtzer, Costain the Painter, Camille Paglia, Robert Frost, Karen Maya Kaapcke, Jacqueline Hamilton, Bruce Weber, Leonardo DellaRocca, Richard Kostelanetz, Alain Arias-Misson, Demi and Arturo Rodriguez, Michael DiJiacomo, Kalina Ivanov, voodoolulu, Adam Merton Cooper, Tim Roth, John Patterson, Mary Patterson, Alan Coulter, Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Randy Newman, Paul Auster, Walt Whitman, David Jenness, Kevin McCutcheon, Victor Varnado, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Bob Holman.

Truth? I like my own art best, otherwise how could so many hours be spent writing, reading and re-reading?

• What influences you to write about/how you do?
Voices, music, silence and ambient noise inform; lust and passion motivate; and philosophy and visual input inspire. Popular culture and the media astonish and teach. The incessant inner monologue is simply a bank from which one makes withdrawals.
• Where do you see the underground writing scene in 25 years?
Given the fact that means of mass-producing words and images are increasingly available, a quarter century from now underground writing will be everywhere and in everything. The subjects for underground literature will remain the same: breaking taboo and controversy. Science and the law always bring new controversies to the fore. After perversion is normalized, it’s difficult to imagine what taboos will remain to break, but certainly if there are any they will be shattered.
• from cait:
including your menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner/snacks, what did you do for the past 48 hours and don’t leave out, who you were with, what/who you talked about, etc etc etc and please include the uglies and be specific with every detail…thank you very much - burp

A fairly long-term fuck buddy has a seven-year-old daughter (scrambled eggs and very thin but not crisp bacon with ketchup and powdered donut). He and I have been fucking one another on and off (three miniature Tootsie Rolls) for nearly a decade.
How can it be I don’t know he has a (half a tuna salad sandwich) daughter (mixed greens salad with a couple shots of Jameson on the side)?

Over roasted, black peppered mushrooms and poached salmon he and I allow as how it will be good to fuck again after a couple years not fucking; how familiar, comfortable and intimate we are having once fucked 40 hours a week for four months running.

We speak of the nature of friendship (duty and responsibility), and the commitment we feel toward one another (two 16 oz. bottles of Poland Spring), how we would certainly be there for one another in a pinch (2 slices cantaloupe, one slice mango and large pithy strawberry).

Next morning when he asks if I want to see photographs of his daughter (2 cups steam-brewed coffee with whole milk), I realize this is the first I’ve heard of her (bowl overly-buttery mushroom leek soup).

She is beautiful (asparagus with porcini reduction).

I wonder if I’ve known him at all (coffee, two miniature Tootsie Rolls, a small bag of cheese doodles and half of a cheap ham & American cheese sandwich on white bread).

Coffee, coffee and more coffee, nicotine.

We fucked but I didn’t cum really (small slice all natural strawberry pie).

Four tablespoons honey,

straight from the jar.....
