Initially the 'pins 'n' needles'
were of little concern,
they just meant filter-tips
not roll your own,
the dropping or squashing
of plastic glasses
in city centre bars.
However, it progressed,
both hands,
loosened grip on
job,
pride,
self-esteem;
you became reclusive-
lost touch,
as slowly it devoured,
wasted limbs,
travelled and spread.

Oh sure,
it's different today,
and via phone,
but it's still numbness..............
still numbness.

And some are real twisted;
not content with verbal,
sexual and physical abuse,
they plummet depths
to mine new seams of depravity.
One pre-teen's father
forced her to watch
the slasher flick 'Candyman' constantly,
made her summon the 'monster'
in front of a mirror-
"Candyman", "Candyman", "Candyman".
This fat folder details
the myriad ways in which
her life has shattered.
And though, as an adult,
she's left deeply sedated,
bound by signature loops
and rocking in a room of strangers-
the saddest part
is her 10year old mind still waiting:
"He's coming."
"He's coming."

Who is?
Her father?
'Candyman'?
Both as unlikely;
yet still she trembles
as if hell's freezing over......

DIAGNOSED

We stayed the night,
and left as chilly dawn
broke a pale yolk above
an empty car-park.
Groups of birds flapped in trees,
like strips of black sky
torn by barbed branches.
A week into spring,
and now it's starting to snow;
perhaps the year's heard your news,
gone mad-
shuffled its seasons
to end in May.
